Celtic Designs
For more than 3,000 years, the Celtic (pronounced Keltic) culture of NW Europe flourished, creating a unique artform which existed virtually unchanged in Northern England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, beyond the reach of the Roman Empire. In the 5th Century, when Roman Christianity spread to these areas, this artform was adapted to Christian motifs in illuminated manuscripts such as the Books of Kells and Lindesfarne. Most of the designs incorporated in these texts were originally carved in stone monoliths of the earlier Celtic culture. The Druids, who held the secret teachings of this culture, transmitted their wisdom orally. It is believed that these mathematically-based designs are phililogic in origin. The intricate patterns and traceries, which were memorized, served as reminders of the storytellers history and the secrets of the priests. These designs are both artistic and spiritual, carrying with them a magical sense of the eternal interconnectedness of all things. In addition, they are vehicles for the meditative process, focusing the conscious mind as it follows the sinuous path of the knot, while the subconscious/unconscious mind understands the deeper meaning, allowing the pattern to reveal the secrets it contains.
